North America > United States

Facts and figures

Background:

Britain's American colonies broke with the mother country in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions. The two most traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US remains the world's most powerful nation state. The economy is marked by steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology.

Brianna and Coury - NationMaster compares countries on various categories, not states of any country. Though I agree, data and graphs on all states of the USA will be extremely useful to have. I have found that this is a fantastic "one - stop - shop" for all my research on international studies, but I wish they provided similar facilities to compare states too. Anyone listening?

Steven, you are right by stating that Italians, Maltnese, Albanians and Greeks are olive in addition, to North African and Middle Eastern people. However, the Census Bureau nor the U.S. Justice Statics point that out.

The end to the Cold War was unfortunate. Now we have to live with fascists and terrorism. During the Cold War the terrorists were forced on the side of the US fighting the Soviet Union.

Hi Steve, the ratios would continue to be be more or less in line with the Energy Information Administration's March 2004 report, which stated that, in the USA, of total energy consumption, the residential sector accounted for about 22% of total energy consumption, the commercial sector about 18%, the industrial sector about 33%, transportation about 27%.

Mike: The term latin referrs to many things. First it means the language of ancient Italy. Nowadays it is also used on anythings it has to do with Italy, Spain and even Portugal some times. A term which applies to central and south america is Latin America because of the fact that they were once colonies of latin countries. (Spain and Portugal) So in the USA the term Latinos is now used for people from Latin America and not for people from the three european Latin countries. A similar example is the term Hispanics which is used for Latin-American immigrants mainly from Mexico (once a part of the kingdom of Spain) and not for someone who comes from Spain. (thats why the term is called "hispanic" and not "spanish"

In the U.S and in Latin America, "Latin" or "Latino" is short for LatinoAmericano -- meaning people from (or originating from) the non-Anglo AMERICAN countries. It does NOT include European continental Italians, French, Spanish or Portuguese.

'Hispanic' is a linguistic term, meaning a speaker of Spanish or someone from a Spanish culture. This would include people from Spain, all of Latin America except Brazil, and LatinoAmericanos in the U.S. and Canada.

Hispanic is equivalent to:
Lusitanic - Portuguese and Brazilians
Anglic (Anglo) - English and Scots, most White U.S. and Canadians
Germanic - Germans, Austrians, Swiss, and many White U.S. and Canadians
Francic (or Gaulic) - French, French Canadians

It seems that there is never a comparison of statistical data when the press speaks of the cost of the Iraq conflict. I'm speaking of ratios such as the current cost of the Iraq war versus the current gross domestic product, as compared to the Vietnam Conflict, WWII, etc. This information is very relevant when speaking of "the cost of war". Is it not?

Where could this data be found?
