In response to Drew - The 'c' means 'approximately' or 'around'. It is used when the value stated is an estimate.

I wish this site would actually educate people on how to read these statistics or, from the start, show accurate percentages. The United States, as a whole, is one of the safest nations in the world, with one of the better legal systems that exists. What matters most is the city. You have to click the little "per capita" link to actually see the true listings. The way this site shows "rankings" next to countries is downright misleading and dangerous in and of itself.

We are forgetting something. These stats are those that are reported. Some countries or regions are not exactly forthcoming in there reporting of crime. Yes we do prosecute and incarcerate more of our own citizens than other countries (Steve, 2005-05-31), because we are more apt to enforce our laws than other countries. That does not mean that we are perfect. I have lived in other countries and have seen some of their methods of law. I would not like to get into their system as a victim. Money talks in most places. As far as moral values, that depends on the person and the place in this country that you live. (California vs Montana, LA vs Helena) I think if you surf the internet you will see that things come out more evenly than you think,in the Western Countries at least. As far as a dangerious place to live, the world is dangerous. Americans as a rule do not try to escape to other countries due to crime or government persecution for crimes commited. No other country hands out so many "severe suspended sentences" as the U.S.. Probably why people come here as opposed to Britain or India.

In responce to Tom sir with respect the other countries have way less crime rate then us country. on law system they have a better law system thats why they have less crime i dont mean government law but punishment laws which we dont have that strong which make other countries prisoner run to us for saftey. which make us look bad afterward.

Why do there seem to be more Murders in the United States than Murder of U.S Troops by terrorists in Iraq? And there we know who is shooting at us and have a chance to make a difference? People here don't seem to realize we the U.S. Military and the people who support us can make a difference to the people of the world. Do they know that the terrorist have killed more Iraq people than we have ourselves (Americans)?

I need to know for school, how many murders per capita were committed in each state since 1991? I have been looking online, and cannot find the answer or even close to an answer. If anyone could help me, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

How interesting it is that the usa always seems to be judge and jury over other nations when obviously they have a problem keeping their own house in order...
