Thse statistics are meaningless as some countries have several types of Police force. For example, France has the Police Nationale (the number cited above), but they also have the Gendarmerie (c. 1000,000), plus the Police Municpale. The UK has one type of force.

Unfortunately, nothing that recent has been published. We have police officers for as recent as 2006 now, but it needs some cleaning up. It shouldn't say %.

Hi Aaron, the list is a compilation of available comparable data. Statistics are hard to come by, especially in developing countries where data management is poor. The specific problems with stats on crime and the policing of crime are discussed in a concise article at: http://www.iss.org.za/Pubs/CrimeIndex/01Vol5No3/Figure.html. You may like to read that.
