Countries (A to Z) Description
Australia With the Great Barrier Reef an iconic tourist attraction, it can be no surprise that Australia has by far the largest area of coral reefs in the world, with 49,000 sq km - nearly three times that of 2nd placed Papua New Guinea. Worryingly, however, the country also the 7th biggest generator of waste per capita, with 400kg of waste created per person per year.
Canada Despite being a central country in the western hemisphere, Canada is still considered the 2nd wildest nation one earth, behind Libya, with some 81.87% of its area considered wilderness. Unsurprisingly, much of that 'wilderness' is protected, and Canada boasts a total of 13,000 sq km of wetlands of international importance, the largest amount in the world with Russia 2nd. It also has the 4th highest total area of land under protection, some 3,822 sq km.
China Amid such major industrial and agricultural activities, the Chinese environment is not in its healthiest state. In 2000, China had the 2nd highest rate of pollution due to carbon dioxide from fossil fuels in the world, though it was half of the number one nation, the US. In fact, 2003 figures show that some 3.4 tonnes of CO2 was emitted by China, still the 2nd highest amount. The food industry, meanwhile, has been fingered out as the chief culprit with freshwater pollution, accounting for more than 28% emissions.
France With nuclear power a major aspect of French industry, there can be little surprise that nuclear waste is also a major concern. In fact, it produces the 3rd highest amount of nuclear waste each year, with 1,130 metric tonnes produced. France's production of total waste per capita is the 10th highest amongst 16 leading industrial countries, with 360 kgs of waste produced per person per year, while freshwater pollution levels stand at 2.49 tonnes per cubic km, ranking France 20th amongst 69 nations, and far behind leaders Israel (27.07 tonnes).
India With such a dependence on fossil fuels, there can be little surprise that India has its share of pollution problems. In 2003, the country's carbon dioxide emissions were the 5th highest in the world, with just over 1 billion metric tonnes. This was still some way short of the US (5.7 billion), China (3.4 billion), and was just behind Russia (1.5 billion) and Japan (1.2 billion). And while its carbon efficiency rating is 57th in the world, its fresh water pollution rate is just 32nd, with 0.97 tonnes of organic pollutants per cubic metre.
Russia Given that Russia is so vast, it is hardly a surprise that it has the largest area of forested land in the world with more than 8 million sq km - almost twice the area of the 2nd nation, Brazil - and almost 66% of its area is considered wild. What is surprising is that it falls much lower in the percentage of land forested, 40th in the world.
South Africa Despite the status that South African wildlife and environment enjoys in the global perception, South African environment is not in the best of conditions. The country has the 11th most polluted freshwater, has the 13th highest rate of CO2 emissions, and the 29th most polluted air in the world.
United States As the most significant global consumer, the US environment has suffered somewhat. The country generates the highest amount of municipal waste per capita in the world (720kgs annually), the highest amount of carbon dioxide per capita (20 tonnes), and the highest amount of nuclear waste per capita (2,100).
