Countries (A to Z) Description
Australia Only 5 countries have the distinction of being larger in surface area than Australia, but many more have a larger population density. With just 2.47 people per sq km, they ranks 224th out of 256 nations on earth. The rural population density is actually higher, however, with 4.86 people per sq km.
Canada Canada's surface area is the 2nd largest in the world, with more than 9.9 million sq km under the Canadian flag - though, in terms of actual land area, it is the 4th largest, behind Russia, China and the US. A large amount of that land is still considered inhospitable, ensuring the country's rural population density rate of 13.98 people per sq km of arable land is one of the lowest on earth. Only Australia's is lower.
United States The US has the curious distinction of having the most amount of significant cities larger than the national capital. At total of 23 cities have more than the 607,000 inhabitants of Washington DC. New York City is the largest city with 8.2 million inhabitants, with Los Angeles (3.8 million), Chicago (2.7 million) and Houston (2.1 million) the top 4. Incidently, New York Metropolitan City is the 4th largest city in the world, with more than 16 million residents.
