Some ought to bring those criminals in. Report all crime - every crime. The greatest crime is when good men see a crime and do nothing. As a Pastor, I know there is the issue of forgiveness which is needful. However, justice is needed and a rule of law because it is God who appoints governments. Well speaking for the middle eastern countries where it is viewed as the woman's fault, and she may actually face penalty, its no wonder that their statistics seem significantly lower. |

I am very disappointed by my (largely) Muslim brothers who are suggesting that if only everyone in the West became Muslim then rape would come to an end in these countries. This view is so simplistic. I would urge you to actually speak to your sisters/mothers (if they are even able to speak to you about such a sensitive issue) about this and find out what the reality is for women living in Muslim countries. |

Isn't it obvious that these statistics show the rape cases actually REPORTED? Of course the US is going to have the most cases because women are taught to speak up when they are raped and they have the resources from the government to help them. In other countries women do not have the courage or protection from the state to report their rape or they may not even understand what constitutes rape. Reporting a rape may even cause them more trouble than staying silent. This is a key point in examining these statistics. |

Amy, thank you for your support. Oddly enough, I work in an office with about 15 males and the same number of women and almost all of the males agree with me. There is hope for us after all. (well maybe they do not agree that women are superior but they all agree rapist should be executed and may have literally said they need to be "hung by their bal-s" Of course I will not argue with that and in fact, I would tie the rape around their testicles |

These stats are from 2002. Here are from 2008 (by UN): http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/Crime-statistics/Sexual_violence_sv_against_children_and_rape.xls South Africa is #1 and Sweden #2. Sweden doubles the number for US, which is placed #4. However there are apparently not stats avaible for many countries. Still, the amount of rapes/citizen in Sweden seems to have six-tupled since the 80's. |

America Australia and Canada are in the top 4 list for rapes, doesn't surprise me, most rapes in America Canada and Australia occur in ethnic communities, in America rape and other violent crimes occur mostly in black and hispanic communities while in Australia rape and other violent crimes occur mostly in the indigenous communities and the same with Canada most rapes and other violent crimes occur mostly in the indigenous communities, also America Australia and Canada are all developed countries which means they are more likely to report rapes, the countries with the actual highest rape rates though are African countries such as South Africa which has the highest rape rate in the world and Papua New Guinea and many other underdeveloped and uncivilised countries. |

pawan oh no buddy not U.S.A i bet...ppl over here in india are no. 1...maybe jus 10% of the rapes go reported...Gals r scared to report b'coz of the followin consequence...im sayin dis coz im an indian n i knw the typical indian mentallity...but i do respect my country for its good things lyk the military ranked 3rd n so on.. |

It is DISGRACEFUL the amount of RAPES that occur in the United States. What is worse are countries that either 'fudge' their numbers or do not at all report them accurately . For example, the Arab countries are notorious for distorting the numbers regardless of the direction. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates are a few that do. While living in the aforementioned, I was acquainted with Philippine men and women who were being raped repeatedly by the people with whom they were employed. That's why so many of the maids in those countries leave their babies on bus stops 1.) because of the circumstances they became pregnant and 2.) fear of reprisal in those countries I perceive as corrupt. Another place I saw this was in Argentina. It is abominable due to economic circumstances that poor people from around the world are being violated in this way and not have ANY recourse for justice. Absolutely awful!!! |

the number of cases that goes un registered in asian countries because of tabboo associated has to be taken in to account. i reckon this data speaks of officially cases regsitered. safe assumption is that nearly 50% of cases go unfiled in prominent asian countries. |

Inflated statistics The U.S. Department of Justice relies on states to identify juvenile sex offenders, defining as “sexual assault” any sexual activity done “not forcibly or against that person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth.” Such definitions were originally intended to protect children and teenagers from exploitation by adults. However, they are now applied even when the supposed offender is too young to give consent. The Department notes that virtually all offenses by juveniles involve family members and acquaintances, confirming that many may be incidents of sex play among siblings or friends, or sexual activity within romantic relationships.6 So it is not surprising that statistics would seem to show that our society is being overwhelmed by violent, sex-crazed children and adolescents. One expert writes that “at least a half-million juveniles commit a hands-on sex crime every year. Another claims that 1 out of every 20 boys is or will be a child molester. Both the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Center for Sex Offender Management state that one-third to one-half of all child molestation is committed by children themselves. The U.S. Department of Justice finds that of all ages 7 - 60, “the single age with the greatest number of offenders from the perspective of law enforcement was age 14. |

In response to Pteridude: At first glance the United States appears to stand out as it has significantly more rapes than other countries. This is misleading however as the United States also has a significantly higher population. To take the population into account click the per capita link at the top of this page. Under per capita ranking, the United States falls to number 9 and the rate is only one quarter of that of South Africa. which has the highest per capita rate. |

In response to 'DudeReloaded' - The US Government Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (in 2002) reports that the military in Myanmar (Burma) is using rape as a weapon against civilian populations in the ethnic regions of the country. But, officially, crime is very low in Myanmar (Burma) and falling. Strictly monitored by a military government, the veracity of the reports are questionable. Reporting and monitoring of crime in democratic Thailand, on the other hand, is known to be effective. |

According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) Statistics website , there were 247,730 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault in the United States in 2002. Approximately 87,000 of these were victims of completed rape. Probability statistics compiled by the National Center for Policy Analysis from Department of Justice statistics reveal that in the U.S. there is a 50.8 percent chance that an arrest will be made if a rape is reported. Eighty percent of those arrested for rape are prosecuted and 58 percent of those prosecuted are convicted. If there is a conviction, there is a 69 percent chance that the perpetrator will be jailed. In 2001, only 39 percent of rapes and sexual assaults in the U.S. were reported to police. When unreported rapes are taken into account, it is estimated that only 6 percent of U.S. rapists (one out of 16) will ever spend a day in jail. |
