26th April 2005 		Kristy, the name pound comes from the value of a Troy pound weight of high purity silver and is the name of the currency of several countries, including Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and the United Kingdom. The former currency of the Republic of Ireland, replaced by the Euro in 1999, was the Irish pound. The symbol for the pound, particularly the pound sterling in the United Kingdom, is a script capital L with a dash (-) or equal sign (=) through it.
