Countries (A to Z) Description
Australia Despite the cliche that Australians love their beer, beer consumption per capita is only a modest 89 litres per year. That is some way short of the leading beer consumers, Ireland (155 litres) and Germany (119 litres). Meanwhile, Australians are the 8th biggest consumers of wine per capita (21 litres), the 14th biggest consumers of spirits (2.6 litres) and the 6th biggest consumers of tea (0.8kgs).
Canada When it comes to drinks, Canadians are not major coffee drinkers, downing just 2.4kgs of coffee consumed per capita per year - less than a quarter of Norway's 10.7kgs. Nor are they major beer swillers, with 70 litres of beer consumption per person per year the 12th highest globally. Nor soda, with the 3rd highest soft drinks consumption rate of 119.8 litres. But they do love fruit juice, with their average of 52.6 litres the highest rate of fruit juice consumption in the world.
France As a nation that is recognised for its fine wines, it may be surprising to learn that France is only the 2nd largest consumer of wine per capita in the world, with 47 litres drunk per person. The top consumers are Italy, with 54 litres per person, while Switzerland are 3rd with 42 litres. Similarly, France loses out in spirits consumption per capita table, with their total annual rate of 7.2 litres failing to catch japan, who consume an average of 8.2 litres per person.
Germany Famed for brewing some of the best beer in the world, it may be surprising to learn that the Germans are only the 2nd biggest consumers of beer in the world, with their average of 119 litres per person per year falling well short of the Irish tally of 155 litres. Strangely, the next most popular drink in Germany is fruit juice, with Germans the 3rd biggest fruit juice consumers in the world behind Canada and the US, with 38.6 litres. Soft drinks consumption, meanwhile, is a lowly 72 litres per person per year, far behind the leading nations, the US (216 litres) and Ireland (126 litres).
Ireland Boasting one of the world's most recognisable beer brands, it comes as no surprise that the Irish are the number one nation when it comes to annual beer consumption per capita. They drink an average of 155 litres per year per capita, head of Germany (119 litres) and Austria (106 litres). Ironically, Ireland also has a great love for tea, with an average tea consumption per year per capita of 1.5kgs, the 2nd highest rate behind the UK (2.3 kgs), and ahead of New Zealand (1 kg).
Italy While many may believe that the French are the biggest wine consumers, Italians actually drink more wine per capita than their western neighbours, with 54 litres per person per year as opposed to France's 47 litres. Perhaps ironically, Italians are also the biggest consumers of bottled water, with 155 litres consumed per year, again ahead of France (146.6 litres) and Belgium (117.1 litres). In terms of diet, Italians do like the healthier cooked option, as indicated by the low McDonald's restaurant per capita rating, of just 0.05.
Japan Despite having such a strong and distinctive national culture, the Japanese have happily embraced western influences, not least of them being the fast food phenomenon. Japan is home to the highest number of McDonald's restaurants outside of the US, with its 3,598 branches about 3 times the number in Canada. However, while alcohol consumption is not a major influence over the Japanese, with their rate per capita of 7.6 litres the 25th highest globally, there is a definite appreciation for spirits. Spirits consumption in Japan is the highest in the world, with 8.2 litres per person, ahead of France (7.2 litres) and Finland (5.7 litres).
New Zealand Food substances represent half of New Zealand’s annual merchandise exports, but the nation consumes the the least amount of bottled water per capita amongst 18 developed nations, the 2nd least amount of coffee per capita but are amongst the biggest Subway frequenters in the world.
United Kingdom There is no surprise that the UK sits at the top of the tea consumption table, with an estimated 2.3kgs consumed per person, 0.8kgs more than 2nd placed Ireland. However, the country trails in the alcohol rankings, lying 6th in terms of beer consumption, with a rate of 97 litres per person per year, and 9th in wine consumption (20 litres) and spirit consumption (3.9 litres).
United States Americans are famed for their love of coffee, but in fact the US is only the 12th largest consumer of coffee in the world, with a modest 3kgs consumed per person per year - just under 30% of leaders Norway (10.7kgs). Even beer consumption is the 8th in the world, at 85 litres per person, and bottled water the 7th at 46.8 litres. The US’s favourite drink is actually soft drinks, with a world leading 216 litres of soft drinks consumed per capita.
