This graph does not show the number of assaults in a given country, nor does the rape chart show the number of rapes in a given country. They show how many assaults and rapes were reported to police. So, even though Canada is sixth on the list of assaults, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it had more assaults than the countries below it. Four of the top 10 countries - U.S.A., U.K., Canada and Australia - for reported assaults are also in the top 10 for belief in police efficiency. People in these countries are more likely to report being victims of crimes. Still, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey, Americans report only 49 percent of violent crimes and 40 percent of property crimes. This is despite the fact that 89 percent of them say police do a good job in controlling crime in their area. |
