Israel, the only officially Jewish country in the world, does not have the largest population of Jews. There are about a million more Jews in the United States than there are in the Jewish state.

Israel does have the largest number of Jews per capita, however, with over 25 times as many Jews per 1000 population than Monaco, the next highest country.

The World Jewish Congress says there were 14.26 million Jews in the world in 1998, in at least 90 countries. Close to 75 percent of the world’s Jewish population lives in Israel and the United States.

Approximately 4,000,000 Jews live in European countries (including Russia). Their populations range from a high of 600,000 in France to a low of 600 in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Argentina and Brazil both have more Jewish inhabitants than all but three of the European countries – France, Russia and Ukraine.
