All of you above are simple....most of the information given is per 100,000 people hence it is a rate and overall population doesn't matter. Even if the majority of the numbers on both sides above were off by 40% the U.S. still has the U.K. beat in a majority of categories for lower numbers. Numbers of prisoners in prisons doesn't reflect crime rates directly alone there are several other causes that effect crime rate drastically more than people in prison such as policing, laws, and even the ever controversial abortion effect crime rates more than prison.

Only the percentages have any meaning because there are so many more Americans than people in the UK. Also, The reason we have so many people in jail is mainly our population I believe. I note that the percentages generally show the UK as less safe/ having more crime. I also note that lots of criminals there still have guns and the ones that don't use other means.

Most crime occur in densely populated metropolitan areas. There's a big difference in that aspect between the US and the UK. A straight up per capita comparison doesn't tell the whole truth.

us population 2011 311,591,917
uk population 2011 62,641,000

The figures for the number of assaults committed in the UK compared with the US appear nonsensical until one recalls the comparative figures for prisoners in the US as opposed to the UK -US 2,019,234 / UK 78,753- in other words the US has hugely -25 times- more criminals in prison -not on the streets committing crimes- than the UK. Which is not necessarily an argument for more UK prison sentencing but does explain the extraordinary disparity in crime figures.
