Most countries with high value addition in agriculture have a high <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/lab_lab_for_by_occ&int=-1>proportion of labor occupied in agriculture</a> as well as cheap labor. <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_pov_sha_of_all_poo_peo>Poverty levels are high as is <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/lab_une_rat&int=-1>unemployment</a> and <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/lab_lab_for_cap&int=-1>under-employment</a>.

The statistics contradict the understanding that mechanization, such as use of <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/agr_tra_con&int=-1>tractors</a>, and increased use of <a href= http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/agr_fer_use&int=-1>fertilizers</a> and <a href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/agr_pes_use>pesticides</a> lead to value addition in agriculture.
DEFINITION: Agriculture, value added (% of GDP). Agriculture corresponds to ISIC divisions 1-5 and includes forestry, hunting, and fishing, as well as cultivation of crops and livestock production. Value added is the net output of a sector after adding up all outputs and subtracting intermediate inputs. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or depletion and degradation of natural resources. The origin of value added is determined by the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC), revision 3.
