This data is no longer useful, 2003 was 7 years ago, China has doubled their CO2 in that time. Please do not embarrass yourself and use this data anywhere. |

The US should stop providing agriculture and other goods to the rest of the world as well as importing goods from the rest of the world. This would lower the need for not only fuel for transportation but create more jobs in the US and lower the need for other nations to provide transportation to the US. The US should also stop immigration to the US except in very limited circumstances, again as the population of the US goes up the new immigrants increase their use of CO2 emitting products. The US has had a stable population for sometime except for immigration. Governments and international agencies, non-profits should also explore other ways besides travel to foreign nation to communicate, such as modern technology advances of video, secure phones, etc. |

In response to Ganesh .R: At first glance, the carbon dioxide emission rates for India appear high compared to more industrialised countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. This is misleading as India's population is significantly higher than those countries. If this statistic is viewed per capita, India's ranking falls to 115th, signficantly lower than Germany (22nd) and the United Kingdom (25th). Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere when wood or fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas are burned. The largest contribution to carbon dioxide emissions are fossil fuel powered electricity generation, some industrial processes (such as metal refining) and motor vehicle exhaust. India has only 12 motor vehicles per 1000 people, however 81% of its electicity is generated from fossil fuels. |

Greenhouse gas emissions in the United Kingdom rose 1.5 percent from the previous year’s level in 2004 and are now higher than they have been since Tony Blair’s Labour government came to power in 1997. The data suggest U.K. may miss its emission target as set by the Kyoto Protocol. Under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, the U.K. must limit annual greenhouse gas emissions to 12.5 percent below 1990 levels for the 2008-2012 period. Emissions were 14.4 percent below in 2002, and 13.4 percent below in 2003, but just 12.6 percent below in 2004. The government has previously admitted that the U.K. will not meet the target in the Labour party’s 1997 election platform of reducing CO2 emissions 20% from 1990 levels by 2010. The latest figures show the U.K.’s CO2 emissions in 2004 were just 4.2% below 1990 levels. |

Carbon dioxide is vital nutrient for plants. According to GreenHouse Gas Online, an estimated 115 billion tons of carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere every year by land-based organisms. The surface waters of the ocean emit an estimated 88 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually, but oceans also absorb 90 billion tons of carbon dioxide, so they actually reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Emissions from the breathing of the 6 billion people who inhabit earth are relatively insignificant. However, the combustion of fossil fuels by humans generates considerable amounts of carbon dioxide. Emissions of carbon dioxide as a result of human activities tend to rise and fall in correlation with Gross Domestic Product. Many scientists believe that carbon dioxide emissions from human activities contribute to global warming. |
