This data is wrong. I live in Japan and we had 30000 people suicideing almost every year an rate is still increasing.

Before any country pats itself on
the back for having low amounts_
They are using very old data
Much has changed in the world
regarding suicide from 1994 & 1995
They really need to update this site!

Hi Jay, there seems to be a reasonable correlation between unhappiness in the general population and suicide.

From happiness studies I've seen, kids don't bring much happiness, but of course it's a contentious field.

The discussion of suicide rates as indirect measures of (un)happiness was mildly interesting. But really, if you look at a large number of countries, you see that all the countries under discussion, including my own (the US) were in the mid range of the data. The small differences among them might be partially explained by data collection and definitions of suicide. Plus: what exactly do the acts of say 20 out of 100,000 people say about the happiness of the other 99,980 ?
But I would also like to make another point. The fact that much of Europe is not even reproducing itself (GFRs way below 2.11, the replacement rate) suggests a "cultural" suicide. This might be viewed as a kind of unhappiness in itself - a certain kind of pessimism, in my opinion. Or maybe Europeans tend to be happiness consumers, living off the past happiness "surplus" of others !!

Kathy, the two males who replied to you like that are typical of so many males and it shows that they think with the brain that is directly above their testicles that you would to turn to pulp. GOOD for you...GO GIRL!

It would be interesting to see this along side a table showing use of benzodiazepine and other tranqualizers and antidepressants. I firmly beleive that thier use and subsequest dependance causes increaced tendancy for suicide. Not the other way around.
I love the fact that Jamaca is down the end. Sun sand and sensi. Yea.

@Tony Vincent: I could be wrong, but I think that the reason why African countries aren't listed on this list is because those countries don't report the cause of death when they report statistics to the World Health Organization.

I would strongly caution anyone about jumping to conclusions based on a lack of data.

It's interesting that Africa with the lowest standard of living in most of their countries is only featured in no 79(Egypt). The abundance of basic necessities like food and shelter (Picking fruit off a tree and sleeping under it) may be less stressfull than in a cold industrialised enviornment.
