Just looked at the CIA factbook and saw South Africa had 370 000 deaths (2003 est.) This would place it first on the list - now it's absent.

Hi Becky, not enough was known about the spread of AIDS in 1990, and surveillance was nowhere like it is today. Nevertheless, the Center for Disease Control in the USA reported that there had been more than 31,000 deaths from AIDS related causes during 1990, ranking AIDS as one of five leading causes of deaths that year. The total number of deaths due to HIV/AIDS per country are available here for 2001. Recently, the UNAIDS released the 'AIDS Epidemic Update 2004', in which it is stated that there are currently about 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, up from 36.6 million in 2002. While it is estimated that around 3 million people died as a result of AIDS in 2004, the total number of AIDS-related deaths between 1981 and end-2003 is estimated at around 20 million.
