Violent crime > Domestic violence amongst Muslims According to HRW 2013 report, Afghanistan has one of the highest incidence rates of domestic violence in the world. Domestic violence is so common that 85 per cent of women admit to experiencing it. 60% of all women report being victims of multiple forms of serial violence. Afghanistan is the only country in which the female suicide rate is higher than that of males. In some recent high-profile cases such as that of Rania al-Baz , Muslim women have publicized their mistreatment at the hands of their husbands, in hopes that public condemnation of wife-beating will end toleration of the practice.

Background As an Islamic state, Afghanistan&rsquo;s approach to crime is pretty hard. However, it is far from the strictest. Still enforcing the death penalty, just 15 <a href="http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_exe-crime-executions">executions</a> took place in 2007, almost a third of the number in the US that year, 120 less than neighbours Pakistan and 302 less than Iran. As a strongly Islamic nation, Saudi Arabia exercises very strict laws, a fact that is reflected in its high number of <a href="http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_exe-crime-executions">executions</a> annually. In 2007, they were had the 3rd highest in the world, with 143, though that was some way behind Iran (317) and China (470). Nevertheless, they still have a <a href="http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri-crime-prisoners">prisoner population</a> of more than 28,600, but over half of these are <a href="http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri_for_pri-crime-prisoners-foreign">foreign prisoners</a>.
