Overview	<p>Japan has the world&#039;s third-largest economy, having achieved remarkable growth in the second half of the 20th Century after the devastation of World War II.</p> <p>Its role in the international community is considerable. There is no airport and it takes more than a day at sea to reach its southern neighbour, Samoa.</p> <p>Most of the 1,500 islanders live by subsistence farming.
