20th March 2005 		After six years of drought and the worst winter in a decade, heavy rains and melting snow have killed as many as 200 people in Afghanistan over the last several days.

In Farah province, 68 people have died in the floods. 40 more died in Faryab and Ghor provinces, while there were 115 confirmed deaths in Uruzgan province. U.S. military helicopters rescued 250 people about 70 kilometers northeast of the U.S. Army base at Kandahar after the Helmand River burst its banks.

Many houses were also wiped out by the floods, including almost 8,000 in Farah province, 2,500 in Heart province, and the houses of more than 260 families in Ghor province.

The average annual precipitation in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul is 313 millimeters.
