DEFINITION: Estimates and projections of urban and rural populations are made by the Population Division of the United Nations Secretariat and published every two years. These estimates and projections are based on national census or survey data that have been evaluated and, whenever necessary, adjusted for deficiencies and inconsistencies. Urban-rural classification of population in internationally published statistics follows the national census definition, which differs from one country or area to another. National definitions are usually based on criteria that may include any of the following: size of population in a locality, population density, distance between built-up areas, predominant type of economic activity, legal or administrative boundaries and urban characteristics such as specific services and facilities.

I think for the statistics to be real , consideration of the area of the country should be made . Fertile lands are abundant in deveoloping countries, mostly in rural areas but still no tangible balance is featured in terms of immigration .
Can we speak of a new phenomenon such as ruralization of urban areas in developing countries ?

Except urbanization is deliberate and focus, it may not result in positive development. There is the need for infrastructural development to move with urbanization

As our rural areas become urbanized, competition for land increases; with land developers and government preferring estate development and infrastructures, to agricultural holdings; to the detriment of a nation that is already struggling with food insecurity. Except individual African government, with particular reference to Nigeria, attempt a deliberate incorporation of urban agriculture into our cities, we may soon be faced with acute food shortage, or high food price as demands out weigh supply. While preaching urbanization, there is the need to understand its implication on agricultural development; noting that over 65% of the population depends on agriculture for survival.

My interest is in finding correlation between African Agriculture and urbanization. Faced with the problem of food insecurity, what danger does urbanization pose for our agriculture, seeing that most of our food comes from rural areas?

Does urbanization bring about better governance?
Governance has more to do with the development of public institutions and accountability within a country than urbanization per se. Urbanization may necessarily involve construction of public infrastructure for housing, electricity, water supply and transportation, but better governance comes about with improved education levels, information flow, an effective legal system and other factors that would enhance and enforce accountability.

Most nations with a high rate of urbanization are countries with limited habitable lands, many of them islands or small states, others with large uninhabitable desert areas.

Countries with a high rate of urbanization generally have a very high rate of industrialization. Poorer countries also show high rates of internal migration from rural to urban areas and uneven economic growth within the country.
