DEFINITION: Maternal mortality reported per 100,000 births 1985-1999. The maternal mortality data are those reported by national authorities. UNICEF and the World Health Organization periodically evaluate these data and make adjustments to account for the well-documented problems of under-reporting and misclassification of maternal deaths and to develop estimates for countries with no data (for details on the most recent estimates see Hill, AbouZahr and Wardlaw 2001). Data refer to the most recent year available during the period specified.

COMMENTARY

Ian Graham
Staff Editor

6th April 2005
The World Health Organization says half a million mothers and 10.6 million children will die each year if governments do not increase their efforts to reduce maternal and child deaths.

Over 70 percent of maternal and child deaths are the result of preventable and treatable conditions such as hemorrhage, infection, unsafe abortion, high blood pressure, neonatal conditions, pneumonia, post neonatal diarrhea, malaria and measles. The majority of maternal and child deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with higher rates among the poor.

The WHO notes that four years ago, governments around the world committed themselves to reducing maternal deaths by three-quarters and child mortality by two-thirds by 2015.
