Author: chris.lockyer781

The education system in Israel consists of three main tiers. These are primary, middle school and high school. Primary schools consists of grades one to six with students attending from age six to twelve. Middle school is grades seven to nine and accommodates students from age twelve to fifteen. High school is for students age fifteen to eighteen and is comprised of grades ten to twelve.

The education system in Iran is more complex although bearing some similarity to the system in Israel. While the education system in Iran is centralized, it is divided into primary, middle and high school. Primary school caters to students from age six to eleven, middle school is from sixth to eighth grade and high school which is not mandatory, lasts from age fifteen to eighteen.

Upon leaving secondary education in Israel, students are ushered either into the army, college or university. Iran has always provided good tertiary education for its citizens, however the country’s sixteen universities were closed in 1979 following the revolution and only gradually reopened between 1982 and 1983. These universities produce some seven hundred and fifty thousand skilled graduates annually.

Israel spends approximately ten percent of Gross Domestic Product –GDP on education and has a literacy rate of ninety five percent. Iran on the other hand, spends less on education and also has a lower literacy rate of eighty seven percent. Only five percent of GDP is allotted to education.
