Terrorism > Government reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden Security consultant Evawere Oyede said that there was a "mixed" reaction in Nigeria towards bin Laden after his death. Oyede elaborated by saying, "Some people see it as a relief. While some people see it as a man who was trying to fight the Western world . Many people saw Osama as a hero." The country's Chief of Police, Hafiz Ringim, announced that Nigeria was put on red alert following bin Laden's death. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation issued a statement that the government "has noted the news of the passing on of Mr. Osama bin Laden as announced" and reaffirmed the country's support for stemming the "demon of terrorism, in all its manifestations", using "the system of global governance of multilateralism". The governing ANC 's national spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu , refused to comment the news and said that the ANC will not issue a formal statement, until there is evidence of the dead body, claiming that "even President Obama hasn't seen the body". The leader of the ruling party's youth wing, Julius Malema , condemned the killing.
