Bird Flu > H5N1 > Recent animal cases A start of an outbreak occured on 27 January of H5N1 in the state of Maharashtra and district of Nandurbar. Newcastle disease has also been reported from the area. No human cases have been detected. Farm personnel as well as backyard farm owners and their families are being closely monitored. The team of cullers and vaccinators are under chemo-prophylactic cover. No further information has been given and no final report yet released. Two cases affecting 16,000 poultry have been confirmed in the province of Matebeleland. Both cases have involved ostrich stock. To date, no chickens have tested positive and antibodies have only been recorded in two ostrich farms, Dollar Block and Mimosa, in Matabeleland North Province.
