Description |
| Brazil |
Agriculture is key aspect of Brazilian economy with a 16% labour force share in the sector. Meat - especially beef - is of particular importance, with Brazil the 3rd biggest meat producer in the world. However, it is also the 4th biggest producer of corn, the 5th biggest producer of cotton, and the 2nd biggest producer of bananas in the world. With 59 million hectares of arable land at its disposal, such varied prominence is hardly surprising. |
| China |
As a country with a vast surface area, China has an understandably large amount of arable land at its disposal, with its 103 million hectares the 4th largest in the world. No surprise then that agriculture is a major sector, and the country is the biggest cotton producer and the biggest meat producer in the world. China is also the 2nd biggest corn producer, behind the US, and the biggest rice producer on earth. |
| India |
Despite the modern technology and industry, the agricultural sector remains a hugely important area of India's economy with some 59.2% share of the labor force employed in the sector. Globally, India's production rates are hugely significant too, with the country established as the 2nd biggest rice producer in the world behind China, and the 2nd biggest wheat producers, also behind China. However, India is the biggest producers of bananas, with 11 million metric tonnes almost double the 2nd biggest producers, Brazil (6.3 million metric tonnes). |
| Mexico |
Agriculture is not the most important sector of the Mexican economy, but with 20% of the population employed in it, is nevertheless significant. It is the 8th largest banana producer in the world, and is the 10th biggest meat producer. However, in terms of arable cropland, just 13% of Mexican land is used, ranking the nation 83rd in the world. |
| Pakistan |
Pakistan’s agricultural industry is very important, with more than a 46% labor force share employed in it. In fact, it has enjoyed regular agricultural growth over the past decade. Perhaps surprisingly, Pakistan is the 4th biggest cotton producer in the world. |
| South Africa |
Corn is a major agricultural product, with 8.9 million metric tonnes produced annually, making South Africa the 10th biggest corn producer in the world. That’s of little surprise, when some 3.3 million hectares - the 7th biggest corn growing area - dedicated to the task. However, agriculture itself is not the chief concern, with a labor share of just 9.3% employed in the sector. |
