Compare key data on Afghanistan & Albania

Author: Edsel.G

Afghanistan is a country in the Middle East that is currently torn apart by a decades of war. Democracy was installed last 2002 when the US-led coalition entered Afghanistan and brought down the Taliban. Prior to this, the land-locked country was ruled by the hard-line Islamists who installed their own brutal interpretation of Islamic Law. Today, Afghanistan has made some progress, but the government, even with the backing of Western armies, failed to fully defeat the Taliban and its Al Qaeda allies. As such, the nation which is just trying to rebuild itself from scratch is considered to be one of the least developed and one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Albania is a European country which, like Afghanistan, is predominantly Muslim. But, unlike Afghanistan, other religious institutions do co-exist with the Islam-adhering population and overall religiosity is much lower. Albania is a developing country, and while it lags behind many European countries in terms of economic and scientific development, the small country is on the way to being a developed country itself. The transition from a centralized to a free-market economy has been widely applauded and has brought much needed foreign investment. As of late, Albania has made attempts to be join the European Union (EU). While development might be slow (growth was at 3.2% last 2011), it is something that has been optimistically received by many of its more advanced neighbors, and this is something that will hasten much coveted EU membership.

This is the measure most economists prefer when looking at per-capita welfare and when comparing living conditions or use of resources across countries. The measure is difficult to compute, as a US dollar value has to be assigned to all goods and services in the country regardless of whether these goods and services have a direct equivalent in the United States (for example, the value of an ox-cart or non-US military equipment); as a result, PPP estimates for some countries are based on a small and sometimes different set of goods and services. In addition, many countries do not formally participate in the World Bank's PPP project that calculates these measures, so the resulting GDP estimates for these countries may lack precision. For many developing countries, PPP-based GDP measures are multiples of the official exchange rate (OER) measure. The difference between the OER- and PPP-denominated GDP values for most of the weathly industrialized countries are generally much smaller. Figures expressed per capita for the same year.

  • Economy > GDP > Purchasing power parity: This entry gives the gross domestic product (GDP) or value of all final goods and services produced within a nation in a given year. A nation's GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates is the sum value of all goods and services produced in the country valued at prices prevailing in the United States.

Economy > Economy > Overview Afghanistan's economy is recovering from decades of conflict. The economy has improved significantly since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 largely because of the infusion of international assistance, the recovery of the agricultural sector, and service sector growth. Despite the progress of the past few years, Afghanistan is extremely poor, landlocked, and highly dependent on foreign aid. Much of the population continues to suffer from shortages of housing, clean water, electricity, medical care, and jobs. Criminality, insecurity, weak governance, lack of infrastructure, and the Afghan Government's difficulty in extending rule of law to all parts of the country pose challenges to future economic growth. Afghanistan's living standards are among the lowest in the world. The international community remains committed to Afghanistan's development, pledging over $67 billion at nine donors' conferences between 2003-10. In July 2012, the donors at the Tokyo conference pledged an additional $16 billion in civilian aid through 2015. Despite this help, the Government of Afghanistan will need to overcome a number of challenges, including low revenue collection, anemic job creation, high levels of corruption, weak government capacity, and poor public infrastructure. Albania, a formerly closed, centrally-planned state, is making the difficult transition to a more modern open-market economy. Macroeconomic growth averaged around 6% between 2004-08, but declined to about 3% in 2009-11, and 0.5% in 2012. Inflation is low and stable. The government has taken measures to curb violent crime, and recently adopted a fiscal reform package aimed at reducing the large gray economy and attracting foreign investment. Remittances, a significant catalyst for economic growth declined from 12-15% of GDP before the 2008 financial crisis to 8% of GDP in 2010, mostly from Albanians residing in Greece and Italy. The agricultural sector, which accounts for almost half of employment but only about one-fifth of GDP, is limited primarily to small family operations and subsistence farming because of lack of modern equipment, unclear property rights, and the prevalence of small, inefficient plots of land. Energy shortages because of a reliance on hydropower - 98% of the electrical power produced in Albania - and antiquated and inadequate infrastructure contribute to Albania's poor business environment and lack of success in attracting new foreign investment needed to expand the country's export base. FDI is among the lowest in the region, but the government has embarked on an ambitious program to improve the business climate through fiscal and legislative reforms. The completion of a new thermal power plant near Vlore has helped diversify generation capacity, and plans to upgrade transmission lines between Albania and Montenegro and Kosovo would help relieve the energy shortages. Also, with help from EU funds, the government is taking steps to improve the poor national road and rail network, a long-standing barrier to sustained economic growth. The country will continue to face challenges from increasing public debt, having slightly exceeded its former statutory limit of 60% of GDP in 2012. Strong trade, remittance, and banking sector ties with Greece and Italy make Albania vulnerable to spillover effects of the global financial crisis.

Government > Flag description three equal vertical bands of black (hoist side), red, and green, with the national emblem in white centered on the red band and slightly overlapping the other two bands; the center of the emblem features a mosque with pulpit and flags on either side, below the mosque are numerals for the solar year 1298 (1919 in the Gregorian calendar, the year of Afghan independence from the UK); this central image is circled by a border consisting of sheaves of wheat on the left and right, in the upper-center is an Arabic inscription of the Shahada (Muslim creed) below which are rays of the rising sun over the Takbir (Arabic expression meaning "God is great"), and at bottom center is a scroll bearing the name Afghanistan; black signifies the past, red is for the blood shed for independence, and green can represent either hope for the future, agricultural prosperity, or Islam red with a black two-headed eagle in the center; the design is claimed to be that of 15th-century hero George Castriota SKANDERBEG, who led a successful uprising against the Turks that resulted in a short-lived independence for some Albanian regions (1443-78); an unsubstantiated explanation for the eagle symbol is the tradition that Albanians see themselves as descendants of the eagle; they refer to themselves as "Shkypetars," which translates as "sons of the eagle"

ALBANIA Albania is one of the smallest countries in the Balkan Peninsula within the peripheries of South Eastern Europe. Majority of the population is made up of Muslims while the remaining 20 percent is divided between Orthodox Christians and Catholics. The country boasts of an impressive shoreline, pristine beaches and the world-renowned BUTRINT National Park which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. That is why the New York Times and Rough Guides (travel website) named Albania in the Top 10 Best Places to Visit for 2014. Unfortunately, Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe with an outstanding debt of 60 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product in 2013. Furthermore, Transparency International, a graft supervisory body, published a report in 2012 that Albania was the most corrupt country in the EU during that period. Unemployment remains high while foreign investment is relatively minimal.

Afghanistan Afghanistan continues to suffer political and economic instability following the downfall of the Taliban Government more than one decade ago. The fanatic Islamic faction has regrouped and continues to be a force to reckon with. Combat troops belonging to the North Atlantic Treaty and the United States have tentative plans to withdraw from Afghanistan before the end of the year. NATO is contemplating on a long-term strategic alliance with the new Afghan government. Economic data provided by the World Bank shows that the country, while still in transition, has gained an 11 percent growth in Gross Domestic Product by 11 percent in 2012. Negotiations for peace also started in the same year which is an indication that amity is finally on the horizon. Pakistan has reportedly agreed to cooperate with reconciliation talks in 2014. However, the country’s economy relies heavily on the illegal drug trade since it supplies more than 90 percent of opium all over the world. The United Nations is pressuring the government to go after drug traffickers and dishonest government officials. Afghanistan is very poor and very much reliant on foreign aid.

Population growth has a direct effect on a country’s economy. Comparing Albania and Afghanistan, Albania’s GDP per capita is four times more than Afghanistan’s although the latter has 5 billion GDP as a whole. This difference in GDP is influenced by the rate of the population growth. Looking into the land area of the two countries, Afghanistan has a wider geographic area giving more space to bigger population. In fact, Afghanistan’s population is ten times bigger and this is likely to continue with a higher birth rate per 1000 population.

Although the two countries depend much on petroleum, natural gas, coal, and other minerals as resources, there is still shortage of these resources to a much more populated country. Afghanistan has more people living below poverty line and the resources are not enough to supply the whole population. In fact, oil consumption is very limited in Afghanistan while Albanians have more privilege in enjoying the country’s resources because of its 3 million population only.

Another economy setback of Afghanistan is blamed on terrorist attacks and years of conflict. Afghanistan is much more dependent on foreign countries in terms of development but international aid has slowly made an impact to the country’s economic growth.

Albania, on the other hand, is starting to welcome foreign investments since it was formerly a closed-market economy. Seeing the importance of foreign investors to its GDP, Albania is taking steps to improve its relations to attract more investments from neighboring countries helping its economy to grow more.

Both Albania and Afghanistan are regarded as developing countries. Their populations are mostly Muslim. Albania is located in Eastern Europe while Afghanistan is part of the Asian Middle East. Muslim populations are common for Middle East countries such as Afghanistan, but are not so for European countries such as Albania. Indeed, Albania is the only European country to have a Muslim majority even though religion is more a historical legacy than devout practice.

Afghanistan is governed as an Islamic republic while Albania has been a parliamentary democracy republic since 1991. Afghanistan has a population of 30 million, 10 times higher than the population of Albania and it is ranked as the 12th country in the world in terms of birth rates.

Dari and Pashto are the two official languages spoken in Afghanistan while the only official language in Albania is Albanian.

The Middle Eastern country is much bigger with an area of 647,500 square kilometer versus 27,398 square kilometer for Albania.

Both countries have experienced difficulties in their economies in the last decades, with Afghanistan still experiencing ongoing conflict and Albania being at the last stage of its transition from a centrally planned state to an open market economy. Afghanistan has a GDP of 18 million dollars versus 13 million for Albania.
